Three Mississippi state congressmen (two unfortunately are “Republican”), have introduced a bill that will make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese people. Standards will be set by the state’s Department of Health in cooperation with Mississippi’s Council on Obesity (what do you wanna bet that the Council on Obesity is a bunch of fat people sitting around trying to decide how to make other people live healthier lives?).
I realize that this doesn’t require any commentary, but I just can’t help myself…
This is ridiculous! No government has constitutional jurisdiction to tell private businesses who they can serve nor private citizens where they can eat. Why is that so hard to understand?
If you’re obese, you’re probably going to suffer more sickness, have less energy, and die younger than your thinner counterparts, but those are the lifestyle choices every citizen gets to make for him or herself while exercising the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Fortunately, the bill stands a slim chance of passing.
I could go on and on, but hopefully the people of Mississippi will tell these legislators to butt out of their lives by kicking them out of the state house.

And they wonder why threatening us with democrats doesn’t work anymore.
Excellent point Larry!
If the state legislature is serious about fighting obeisity, why not spend a little money on programming that promotes fitness (state-wide “walk for fitness” or “run for fitness” that have been adopted by states other than missouri – see http://fixinghealth.blogspot.com/2006/03/lifestyle-chronicles-nga-wellness.html). In the long run, I’d be that the state would end up saving health care dollars.
