General Petraeus and PFC Beauchamp – Michael Yon’s Got ‘Em Both

Here’s the Oct. 25 dispatch by Michael Yon, entitled “Beauchamp And The Rule of Second Chances”.  For those of you who have never heard the story, General Petraeus was once accidentally shot in the chest during a live-fire exercise.  After being operated on by Bill Frist (yes, Sen. Frist), Petraeus gave the offending soldier a second chance, sending him to Ranger school and promoting the soldier’s commanding officer.  Yon’s conversation with Beauchamp’ s Battalion Commander, LTC Glaze, posits that Beauchamp has learned his lesson and that it’s time to let him get back to fighting the war.  I agree.  My issue is with The New Republic, which jumped at the chance to publish stories of horrific behavior by soldiers before verifying the accounts with separate sources.
