Regents Vote To Arm Campus Police

Speaking of equivocating, read the Des Moines Register article regarding the Regents’ vote (6-2 in favor) authorizing the arming of campus police. Despite Gov. Culver’s unwillingness to take a stance on this issue, the Regents have come to a common-sense majority decision in this case, reversing a 40 year policy preventing sworn police officers from carrying weapons on campuses state-wide. Gartner expresses his opposition by framing it in terms of “bigger problems on campus”, like alcohol and drugs. Sorry Mr. Gartner, as much as I enjoyed your speech in 2004 at the Hawkeye Baseball Lead-Off Dinner, where you spoke about never being able to lean right in your editorials, the biggest issue on our campuses today is the security of our students, first and foremost. Oh, and we can deal with the drugs and alcohol by taking a stronger stance on our campuses with regards to those issues too.
